DAILP Honored with a Grant from The National Historical Publications and Records Commission

Written by Hailey Punis

The DAILP Team is pleased to announce that we were mentioned in The National Archives newsletter. The team received a grant of $125,000 from their National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) program to build a second digital edited collection of Cherokee language manuscripts titled “The Willie Jumper Stories.” This funding enables the DAILP translation team partners in the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians  to translate, edit, and annotate 101 pages of the 1964 collection written by Cherokee Baptist priest Willie Jumper. Along with the translations, DAILP will produce accompanying audio recordings and instructional material that will continue to be published on the DAILP website. The “Willie Jumper Stories” are instrumental in providing information regarding Cherokee culture, tradition and language. Thanks to this grant by NHPRC, these stories can be shared and enjoyed with the public.

More details about the particulars of our work with “The Willie Jumper Stories” are featured in Northeastern Global News in the article “Preserving Cherokee heritage: Northeastern revives ‘The Willie Jumper Stories’ and other lost tale” by Erin Kayata.
